What is an instrumental preamp?

An instrument preamp is a device that adapts and amplifies an instrument's signal before it enters a mixer, audio interface, PA system, or amplifier. Most instruments, such as acoustic guitars with piezo pickups, bass and electric guitars, violins, and similar stringed instruments, produce a signal with high impedance (which significantly affects the warmth and fullness of the sound) and relatively low level. For this reason, the signal can be weak, lacking definition, and prone to noise, which is a major problem in live production or studio recording. Instrument preamplifiers provide impedance matching, optimal signal level, and allow for precise tonal control.

Radial PZ series - Acoustic instrument preamplifiers

Radial PZ series of instrumental preamplifiers is intended for acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitars, violins, double basses, mandolins,... The devices enable precise tone control in order to preserve the most natural sound of the instrument. They combine quality preamp circuits, various EQ and filters for feedback control as well as balanced DI outputs for reliable signal transmission on stage or in the studio. Radial PZ-Pre

The PZ-Pre is a professional preamplifier for acoustic instruments optimized for instruments such as acoustic guitar, double bass or violin. It uses Class-A PTZ piezo boosters and comes with two inputs that allow switching between two connected instruments or mixing signals from two pickups. For shaping the tone, there are EQ, notch filter and high-pass filter that remove unwanted feedback on the stage.

Radial PZ-Pre has built-in DI outputs that allow the signal to be sent pre- or post-EQ, meaning you can send a clean signal to the speaker and an adjusted signal to the monitors or vice versa. It integrates additional functions such as boost, mute, effects loop and tuner outputs, making it the ultimate control device for complex acoustic live performances.

Radial PZ-Pro

Radial PZ-Pro is the most advanced device in the PZ series that has two completely separate channels with their own EQ, which allows you to switch or mix the signals of two instruments or pickups.

On the second channel, there is an XLR input with the possibility of phantom power, so it is possible, for example, to combine a piezo pickup and a condenser microphone to achieve the most natural sound of the instrument. Other characteristics are the same as on the PZ-Pre, and due to its flexibility and detailed tone control, it is considered a flagship solution for professional performers.

Radial PZ-Deluxe

PZ-Deluxe is a compact preamplifier and DI box pedal for acoustic instruments. It comes with one channel that integrates semi-parametric EQ. Additional functions such as mute switch, phase switch (feedback reduction), low-cut filter and boost switch are also included.

PZ-Deluxe is often used as a simple solution for live gigs and is part of the pedalboard setups of musicians around the world.
