Project date: 2021.

Project type: Video,

Archaeological Museum of Istria is a special museum established in 1902 in Pula. It covers an area of 3,600 m² and contains three collections in permanent display: prehistoric, ancient and medieval. Today, the Archaeological Museum of Istria is the most visited museum in Croatia. In addition to the permanent exhibition, it cares for ancient monuments of world importance, such as probably the most famous ancient Arena Pula, the Little Roman Theater and the Sergius Arch. It manages numerous sites in Istria from the prehistoric, ancient and medieval times. The museum has three gallery spaces of its own, “Sacred Heart”, C8 and “Window to the Past”, in which exhibitions from the fields of archaeology, history and art are regularly held. In 2013, the complete renovation and reconstruction of the building and the surroundings of the Archaeological Museum began, which was completed with the project “Conservation and reconstruction of the Small Roman Theater – Pula”.

Project description

The Small Roman theater is the only preserved Roman theater on the soil of Croatia. It is assumed that it was built in the 1st century AD and is located on the eastern slope of the Pula hill at the foot of the Venetian fortress in Pula (Castrum). The remains of the foundation of the stage building and parts of the semi-circular auditorium, which was partially reconstructed, were found and preserved in this place, and the comprehensive reconstruction took place as part of the above-mentioned project. After almost two decades of neglect, the Small Roman Theater was renovated to serve as a concert, theater and performance space. Today, the theater is actually integrated with the adapted and extended building of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, and they are ‘’connected’’ by a multimedia glass facade i.e. transparent LED screen that was designed and implemented by the LAV Projekt team.

We have successfully designed and installed a multimedia facade, comprising of a 330m2 transparent LED display Nexnovo XRW10, along with all the necessary equipment, to cater to the requirements of the reconstruction and renovation of the Archaeological Museum of Istria‘s building. The very delivery, installation and commissioning of this indoor LED screen certainly represents one of our biggest and most complex technical-technological project challenges. The dimensions of the screen installed on the inside of the glass facade of the museum are 34.56 x 9.45 meters, it is composed of 792 transparent LED modules in 18 different dimensions, which makes it the largest display of its type in Croatia. One of the main challenges of this project was to obtain a complete picture of the LED screen with regard to the way the existing metal structure and supports of the museum’s glass facade were performed. However, our expert team successfully faced this challenge with the detailed preparation of the project. Through cooperation with the manufacturer Nexnovo, we actually designed a custom made solution that was adapted to all the requirements and technical specifications of this project.

The resolution of the screen is 3312 x 900 pixels and the total width of over 33 meters allows an extremely high-quality image with a transparency of more than 77%. We mounted this transparent LED screen at a distance of only 6 cm from the glass wall of the facade in order to minimize the reflection of light from the glass. Since the facade glasses of the museum are in a greenish shade, very good illumination of the screen is necessary to reduce ambient reflection. Thus, this screen has a surface brightness of about 7,500 nits, which is much higher than standard indoor LED screens, where these values range up to a maximum of 1,500 nits.

The central controller for LED display is  Novastar NovaPRO UHD Jr., along with computer, manages the entire system, specifically directing the playback of video material. This advanced system allows for flexible management of the content that will be showcased on the LED screen, fostering creativity in the presentation of multimedia content. Positioned in front of the renovated Small Roman Theater, the transparent LED screen at the Archaeological Museum of Istria serves as a platform for displaying diverse content, including films, historical projections, and cultural event invitations. Acting as a bridge between the theater and the museum, this LED screen offers tourists and locals an innovative visual experience of the city, while also promoting the cultural heritage of Istria through a range of outdoor events.
