New DPA innovations – CORE+ technology and MicroLock® connector!

Danish DPA Microphones will present its new technologies at this year's NAMM and ISE fairs! Last week they introduced the MicroLock®, an innovative compact microphone connector with a new locking system, and today they introduced the new DPA CORE+ technology, which raises the bar for distortion-free microphone sound. The new CORE+ technology is a revolutionary breakthrough in microphone design that blurs the lines between what is acoustically possible and what is not. The new DPA technology enables the neutralization of distortion throughout the entire dynamic range of the microphone, while making the rest of the distortion almost immeasurable and imperceptible to the human ear. By removing these distortions, sound engineers are afforded a new level of sound clarity that allows them to create an unparalleled listening experience for audiences.

Distortion neutralization

On DPA CORE microphones, it is possible to handle higher SPL levels (maximum sound pressure level) without significant distortions up to 1% THD (total harmonic distortion - the percentage of the signal that distorts at maximum SPL), and on microphones with the new CORE+ technology, that percentage or distortion is completely eliminated. This means, as we can see on the picture below, that microphone distortion is reduced to an absolute minimum in the entire dynamic range.

For audio professionals with high expectations of quality, it is extremely important that distortion starts to appear as high up the SPL scale as possible. Ideally, the sound picked up by the microphone should not gradually change its character with increasing sound pressure level, but should remain as clear and as close to the original sound as possible. The new DPA CORE+ technology enables exactly that.

The implementation of CORE+ requires a redesign of existing DPA microphones, which DPA plans to achieve by gradually updating its portfolio. The first solutions to be addressed are 5 mm omnidirectional headset and lavalier microphones. Currently available microphones with CORE+ technology include the omnidirectional 4060, 4061, 4071, 4661, 4066, 4266 and 4466 as well as the miniature cardioid DPA solutions - 4088, 4188, 4288 and 4488, along with the 4166 and 4062 omni. MicroLock® takes advantage of the renowned MicroDot connector currently used with DPA microphones. Unlike MicroDot, MicroLock features a newly designed locking mechanism, allowing users to make quick, easy and secure connections as well as an additional level of protection against accidental disconnection during use.

Flexibility and improved reliability are complemented by a significantly longer lifespan thanks to improved materials and a redesigned construction. The connector features a more robust, solid metal body, while an improved electrical design offers improved stability and signal reliability.

You connect the MicroLock in exactly the same way as the MicroDot. The only difference is that you don't have to screw it all the way in - the connection is secure, and the connector is considered assembled as soon as you hear a click or feel tactile feedback. The clicking sound is produced by the locking prongs that are pressed together by the spring, ensuring that the connector will not unintentionally come loose until you actively unscrew it. It is intended for audio professionals looking for versatility and practicality in their equipment and is compatible with a number of wireless systems (adapters available).

DPA will first introduce MicroLock on its omnidirectional miniature mics (available with CORE+ mics) and passive adapters, followed by cardioid variants. The new connector is fully compatible with the existing MicroDot connector, but requires male and female MicroLock connectors to achieve the locking capability.
